Police will provide security protocols for all political parties ahead of the upcoming national parliamentary election and referendum, outlining measures to ensure the safety of political leaders and prospective candidates, the CA Press Wing said on Sunday.

According to police sources, the protocols will include clear guidelines on how political leaders and candidates can ensure security at their residences and offices, during movement and public rallies, and in cyberspace.

Additional security arrangements are also being planned for frontline leaders of the mass uprising and other key political figures.

The announcement comes amid ongoing investigations into the attack on Sharif Osman Hadi, spokesperson of the Inqilab Moncho and a prospective independent candidate from the Dhaka-8 constituency.

Police said the attackers and their associates involved in the assault on Hadi have already been identified, and intensive operations are underway to arrest them. The motorcycle used in the attack has been seized, and fingerprint analysis of suspects is currently in progress.

To prevent the main suspect from fleeing the country, photographs and identifying information were circulated to all immigration checkpoints on Friday night. Patrols by Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) have also been intensified in border areas.

Although the suspects’ locations have reportedly been traced several times within the country, police said repeated changes in location have so far prevented their arrest.

Investigators have also collected the travel history of the prime suspect, identifying him as an IT businessman who has traveled to several countries in recent years. Records show that his most recent foreign trip was to Singapore on 21 July.

Police said several other individuals suspected of involvement in the attack have been placed under surveillance.

Separately, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Sunday summoned the Indian High Commissioner and reiterated its request for the extradition of Sheikh Hasina and Asaduzzaman Khan, both convicted by the International Criminal Court, to Bangladesh.

Bangladesh also requested India’s cooperation in preventing the suspects involved in the attempted killing of Sharif Osman Hadi from crossing into Indian territory.

In the event that any of the suspects manage to flee to India, Bangladeshi authorities asked that they be detained immediately and extradited to Bangladesh.
