Jatiya Nagorik Party (NCP) convener Nahid Islam on Tuesday warned against attempts to politicize religion and Liberation War to divide Bangladesh, emphasizing that both are integral to the nation’s identity.

Speaking at a gathering in Shahbagh after an anti-aggression rally, Nahid Islam said, “Just as the country cannot be divided in the name of Liberation War, it cannot be divided in the name of Islam. The Liberation War belongs to me and so does the July movement.”

He criticized current politics for exploiting religious sentiments, stating that Bangladesh, despite being 54 years independent, has yet to fully address questions surrounding the Liberation War.

“Through politics, Awami League has repeatedly tried to divide the country under the guise of Mujibism. We believe the Liberation War is one of the foundations of Bangladesh state,” he said.

Nahid Islam also raised concerns over personal and public security following the attack on Sharif Osman Hadi.

“We can no longer view these incidents lightly. We must ensure our own safety. The people are our only protection; if law enforcement fails, we will take necessary action,” he said.

Addressing electoral issues, he claimed that efforts are being made to obstruct Bangladesh’s elections and stressed the need for a free and fair vote to ensure democratic transition.
