BSF member detained after ‘straying’ into Bangladesh

The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has detained a member of India’s Border Security Force (BSF) for allegedly entering Bangladesh through the Dangapara border of Dahagram Union in Patgram upazila of Lalmonirhat.

According to a BGB press release, the BSF member, identified as Bed Prakash, was detained early Sunday. He is a member of the 174th BSF Battalion.

The press release said the BSF personnel mistakenly crossed about 100 yards into Bangladeshi territory after losing his way in dense fog while chasing cattle smugglers.

A BGB patrol team detained him and took him to their camp.

The detained BSF member is currently being held at the Angarpota Border Outpost (BOP) along with his personal weapon, ammunition, and other equipment.

The BGB said the BSF has expressed regret over the incident and requested the return of the detained personnel.

The matter will be handled in accordance with the Bangladesh–India Joint Border Guidelines and international law, the BGB said, adding that a battalion-level flag meeting has been proposed to resolve the issue.
