At least seven explosions were heard in Venezuela’s capital, Caracas, late on Sunday, followed by a low-flying aircraft, according to The Associated Press.
Power was reportedly cut in parts of the southern capital near a major military base, as the government of Venezuela accused the United States of targeting civilian and military installations across multiple states. Trump says US carried out ‘large-scale strike’ on Venezuela.
President Donald Trump said Saturday that US forces had captured Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro after launching a “large scale strike” on the South American country.
“The United States of America has successfully carried out a large scale strike against Venezuela and its leader, President Nicolas Maduro, who has been, along with his wife, captured and flown out of the Country,” Trump said on Truth Social.
Trump said he would give a news conference at 11:00 am (1600 GMT) at his Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida.
Iran on Saturday condemned what it described as an American attack on Venezuela, after Caracas accused the United States of being behind explosions that rocked the capital.
The Iranian foreign ministry in a statement said it “strongly condemns the American military attack on Venezuela and the flagrant violation of the national sovereignty and territorial integrity of the country”.
Washington has yet to comment on the blasts in Venezuela.
Sounds of explosions were still being heard around 2:15 am, although their exact location was unclear.
Trump on Monday said the United States hit and destroyed a docking area for alleged Venezuelan drug boats.
This comes after weeks of pressure on Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro from the Trump administration.
The US president accuses his Venezuelan counterpart of infiltrating America with drug trafficking and crime.
US President Trump ordered strikes on sites inside Venezuela, including military facilities, US officials tell the BBC’s US partner CBS News.
CBS said the Pentagon referred all requests for comment to the White House.
Multiple explosions, accompanied by sounds resembling aircraft flyovers, were heard around the city, an AFP journalist reported.
“Venezuela rejects, repudiates, and denounces before the international community the extremely serious military aggression perpetrated by the current government of the United States of America against Venezuelan territory and people,” Maduro’s government said.
The White House and Pentagon have not commented on the explosions and reports of aircraft over the city. US media outlets CBS News and Fox News reported unnamed Trump administration officials confirming that US forces were involved.
