Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam has said that the government is legally allowed to campaign for the upcoming referendum or a “Yes” vote. Legal experts have confirmed there is no restriction on this.
Speaking at a press briefing on Sunday at Foreign Service Academy, Shafiqul Alam also highlighted preparations for the upcoming elections.
He noted that the Chief Adviser, Dr. Muhammad Yunus, recently met with the European Union (EU) Ambassador, who confirmed that the EU would send a large observer team for the elections; marking the first time EU is sending observers, as previous elections were deemed not fully credible.
“During the meeting, the referendum was discussed and it was clarified that the government can encourage a ‘Yes’ vote,” Shafiqul Alam said.
“The Chief Adviser has informed them that Election Commission and all relevant authorities are fully prepared. Every measure has been taken to ensure free, fair, and peaceful elections.”
He added that so far, the electoral environment is balanced, with no extra advantages being provided to any political party.
Shafiqul Alam also highlighted potential challenges, noting that social media could play a significant role in spreading misinformation by elements associated with the previous government.
However, he reassured that law enforcement is fully prepared to maintain order.
“The government and Election Commission believe law and order is under control ahead of the elections. While a few isolated incidents of violence have occurred, authorities are closely monitoring them and suspects have been apprehended,” he said.
Senior Assistant Press Secretary Foyez Ahmad added that recent claims of communal motives in the murder of Moni Chakraborty in Narsingdi, which stemmed from a family dispute, are being circulated as misinformation. He urged the public to rely on verified information before reacting.
