Environment, Forest and Climate Change Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan on Sunday urged voters to cast a ‘Yes’ vote in the upcoming referendum, saying it is essential for bringing meaningful change, reform and accountable governance.

Addressing a referendum promotion and voter motivation view-exchange meeting at Nilphamari District Shilpakala Academy auditorium in the afternoon, Rizwana said that those who genuinely support reform and responsible political leadership must vote in favour of change.

“If you want reform, accountability and real transformation, then voting ‘Yes’ is the only way forward,” she said.

She stressed that change cannot be achieved by maintaining the existing governance structure, laws, regulations and leadership.

Highlighting the government’s reform agenda, the adviser said several reform commissions have been formed to chart a pathway for transformation.

She noted that six commissions related to electoral reforms, balance of power and accountability have held extensive discussions with all political parties while preparing their recommendations.

Rizwana, who also serves as information and broadcasting adviser, said the government is prepared to overcome any obstacles to ensure the vote is held smoothly.

“No matter what challenges arise, we will go to the polls. The government’s greatest strength lies with the people and the voters,” she added, urging citizens to be ready to exercise their voting rights.

She informed that preparations for the referendum are nearly complete, with symbol allocation scheduled for January 21 and the start of the campaign on January 22.

Calling on voters to engage actively, she said people should start considering their choices now and turn up at polling stations to end misrule.

Nilphamari Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Nairuzzaman presided over the meeting, while Md Abu Jafor, director (joint secretary) at Rangpur Divisional Commissioner’s Office, also addressed the gathering.

Earlier in the day, Rizwana inaugurated a colourful rally by releasing balloons at Deputy Commissioner’s Office premises.

Organised by the Nilphamari District Administration, the rally marched through various city streets before concluding at District Shilpakala Auditorium, aiming to raise awareness about the referendum and motivate voters.
