Nahid Islam, convener of the National Citizen Party (NCP), has said that the nation elections in February appear unlikely.

He said, “We want to participate in the (Constituent Assembly) election on the legal basis of the July Charter. Beyond that, I don’t think any election will take place.”

He made these remarks on Sunday (August 24) while speaking at an event titled “The Heroic Uprising of 2024 and the Role of the Diaspora in Building Post-Revolution Bangladesh” organized by the NCP Diaspora Alliance, Malaysia.

The NCP convener added, “From the very beginning, we have never debated over the election date. We have only said — if reforms and justice are ensured, even if the election is held in December, we will have no objection.”

When asked about possible seat-sharing with BNP, Nahid Islam dismissed such speculation, saying, “Talks about postponing elections or similar claims are just baseless gossip. Seat-sharing negotiations and such matters are false propaganda and rumors.”

He emphasized that reforms are more important to him than merely contesting or succeeding in the election: “After the mass uprising, we want to be able to tell the people that we brought about the change — either through the revolution or through the July Charter. That’s why reform is our main agenda. Only after reforms will we think about elections.”

The event was attended by NCP Joint Member-Secretary Alauddin Mohammad as a special guest. The program was presided over by Mohammad Enamul Haque, President of NCP Diaspora Alliance, Malaysia, and conducted by Alamgir Chowdhury Akash.
