Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin on Thursday confirmed that Election Commission (EC) is making comprehensive preparations to hold the 13th parliamentary election in February, ahead of the holy month of Ramadan.

Speaking to reporters at Nirbachan Bhaban, the CEC said, “Our final preparations are underway. As you can see, we are working vigorously to ensure all necessary arrangements are in place.”

He noted that the Chief Adviser, currently in New York, has already announced that Bangladesh will hold its next general election in February, ensuring a peaceful democratic transition.

We are working to turn the Chief Adviser’s commitment into reality by conducting a free, fair and historic election,” Nasir Uddin stated.

Emphasizing the EC’s impartiality, he added, “We do not act under anyone’s instruction. We are guided by our conscience, the law and the Constitution. We aim to walk a straight path and carry out our duties neutrally, without favouring any side.”

The CEC underlined that political parties are the key stakeholders in the electoral process and their cooperation is essential for a credible election.

Using a sports analogy, he warned against electoral misconduct. “If all the players enter the field intending to commit fouls, it becomes impossible for the referee to ensure a fair game,” he said, citing a recent newspaper report.

He urged all participants to uphold democratic norms, “Those contesting should not step into the electoral field with the intention to foul, but rather to help ensure a good election. EC will take all necessary steps to prevent misconduct.”

Responding to Jatiya Nagorik Party’s (NCP) claim for ‘Shapla’ electoral symbol, the CEC said the matter had already been clarified by EC’s Senior Secretary.

He explained that Nagorik Oikya, led by Mahmudur Rahman Manna, was the first to apply for the symbol and later met with him personally. NCP’s application for the same symbol came afterward.

“They (NCP) are a political party and a stakeholder. They have the right to submit letters to the Commission,” Nasir Uddin said, adding that the issue will be discussed in the next EC meeting before a decision is taken.

In response to a query on whether the upcoming election would adopt a proportional representation (PR) system, the CEC confirmed that there is no provision for PR under the current Representation of the People Order (RPO).

“RPO clearly outlines the electoral process and that’s what we are following,” he said.

When asked about recent remarks made by an NCP leader, the CEC responded calmly, “Politicians have the right to express their views. We don’t respond in kind. We are better listeners. Our focus remains on fulfilling our legal responsibilities.”

Reaffirming the Commission’s resolve, he concluded, “We are fully committed and preparing in full swing to hold the parliamentary elections in February.”
