Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Ahmad Rafiq, a veteran of Language Movement and a respected poet, essayist and Rabindra scholar.
Ahmad Rafiq passed away on Thursday night while receiving treatment at Intensive Care Unit of BIRDEM Hospital in Dhaka.
In a condolence message issued early Friday, Professor Yunus paid tribute to Rafiq’s life and legacy, describing him as “a prominent witness and a fierce voice of our Language Movement,” as well as “an exceptional poet, essayist, researcher and guiding light in Rabindra studies.”
Highlighting Rafiq’s extensive contributions, the Chief Adviser noted that he enriched Bangla literature, culture and the history of Language Movement through his authorship and editing of over a hundred books.
Professor Yunus also recalled Rafiq’s recognition beyond national borders, stating that Tagore Research Institute in Kolkata honoured him with the title Rabindratattacharya (Rabindra Exponent) for his outstanding scholarship.
“His passing is an irreparable loss to the country’s cultural and intellectual life,” the Chief Adviser said.
“Even amid physical and visual challenges, he remained dedicated to spreading knowledge until the very end.”
Praying for eternal peace for the departed soul, Professor Yunus said Ahmed Rafiq’s life and work will continue to inspire future generations. He extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, friends and admirers across the literary and cultural communities.
